An organised whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts.
Often used when making optical Illusions and when making logos. It is used to hide messages or other images within an image or building an image out of other small images or shapes.
I could experiment with this to create my own hidden messages, where I could make it so that the targeted audience will be the ones capable of deciphering the image. I could also experimenting making these hidden messages with type.
This principle maintains that when the human mind forms a percept or “gestalt,” the whole has a reality of its own, independent of the parts. There is a famous phrase by Gestalt psychologist Kurt Koffka, “The whole is other than the sum of the parts”.
